Deconstruction of an Era

Caitlyn's new big girl bed was delivered today.  She is beyond thrilled.  I swear I never knew a kid who was so eager to grow up.

She's been scaling the sides of her crib for a month now.  She figured out a way to hitch her toes around the high bar and propel herself over the side.  I've never actually seen her land, but I've heard the thumps.  The girl just canNOT be contained any longer, and we knew it was time.

There was a little assembly required, and she busily handed me screws exclaiming, "MY new bed!" all the while.  We made it up with her new self-selected  Dora bedding, and she hopped right in without a backward glance.

Catie is like that...she's always on to the next new thing as fast as her chubby little legs can carry her. She doesn't reflect, she doesn't get sentimental, she doesn't look back.  There's a lot I can learn from my baby daughter.

I was fine as I began taking the first screws out of her crib.  I was FINE, I tell you...until I saw Jaden's little teeth marks on the rail.  Now I'm thinking about all the nights I laid my babies to sleep in this pretty little crib.  Midnight feedings.  Sleepy-time lullabies.  Snuggly blankies covering cute baby tushes that smell of lavender bath oil.

Taking apart this crib was definitely not a job for someone like me.  Like Catie, I should be ready to move on without pause.  But then, nothing is ever as simple and joyful as when you're two.
